Hello there!

This is Mario's Evil Level. It is a challenging hack, but before you begin, there are a few things I would like to tell you.

This level won the first place for the hardest/longest competition in the first Kaizo level contest at www.smwcentral.net

I made this hack entirely by myself way back starting in 2008, and to my knowledge, all of the ideas are/were original at the time. If some idea has been used before somewhere, I was not aware of it, as there were so many things that were copied everywhere. I tried not to copy other people's ideas.

I have put custom music, some custom graphics, some modified graphics, some custom blocks, and some patches in the ROM. I have also made a custom Overworld, a custom title screen, and a custom intro level, as well as some ExGFX and some HEX editing. If you die on the intro more than five times, the life counter will show nonstandard numbers. You can use a savestate, or start over. Regarding savestates, some people do not like to use them. Just understand you will likely not have a good time if you are unwilling to use them, as they are required to beat this hack. Do not be afraid to use them. Embrace using them! I recommend mapping a save state and load state button to your controllers for quick access. Personally, using an Xbox 360 controller, I used Left Trigger for Save State, and Right Trigger for Load State. I also recommend using multiple save states, to avoid any accidental presses! I hope you have fun!

This is a long level, and difficult, make no mistake. As I am a sarcastic and easygoing person by nature, I have put in several "Easter Eggs" that I hope you will enjoy.

I made this hack for a few reasons. At the time, Kaizo hacks were first coming out, and were not a standard thing. There were also far fewer patches, and other resources than nowadays. However, many of the Kaizo/difficult hacks had all kinds of graphical glitches, stacked/floating munchers, abuse of glitches, and while difficult, often looked horrible. Before I began work on this hack, I decided for myself that I was going to do something different than the norm. So I decided to make a hard hack that did not look visually appalling. I also decided I did not want to force the player to use glitches to complete the game or require the use of slowdown to complete it. In Mario's Evil Level, no glitches are intended to be used, so if you know of a glitch that can be used, I almost certainly did not know it existed at the time, and is not the intended way to complete the level. Additionally, I decided to only use one tileset for the entire level. Hacks that have hard levels, comprising of small levels in different rooms make the creative side easier, and that is not what I wanted. As a result, I present a hard hack, with no floating/stacked munchers, no glitchy graphics, no game glitches, no use of slowdown required, actually possible, and yet still challenging.

BTW, this level has been thoroughly tested, with no known errors, but if you happen to find some, please let me know, and I will try to correct them. It was originally intended to be played with Zsnes, and has not been tested by me with SNES9x, so there may be unknown weirdness using it or anything else. If you happen to find any, feel free to let me know.

***Special thanks to xHF01x who fixed the music so the hack would work in modern systems and Snes9x, and also Parahax_ who helped me with some palette and graphics related questions.***

Thanks for downloading this, and taking the time to read all of this, even if you simply skipped to the end. I hope you enjoy Mario's Evil Level, and have fun playing it! Good luck!

Thanks, Mapsking

p.s. There is a technical glitch with a custom block in this hack. Regarding water, it has been discovered that it can get stuck, and you will get stuck to the wall. All I can say is that I was not aware of it at the time it was made, and all you can do to avoid it is to avoid the wall.

p.s. #2. There is a silly little secret in Loser's House for anyone who reads this!
